Andrews is a small town in the Texas Panhandle, located about 30 miles south of Amarillo and 80 miles east of Wichita Falls. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. Andrews was founded in 1871 by John Andrews and his wife, Emma. The first store in the town was built on what is now Main Street. In 1896, the town incorporated as a city and had its first mayor, Wm. H. Coker. During World War II, Andrews supplied food to Fort Bliss in San Antonio and served as headquarters for General Dwight D Eisenhower's Allied Expeditionary Force during Operation Market Garden. After the war, Andrews became an agricultural center with a wide variety of crops being grown such as cotton, corn, rice, tomatoes, haystack cheese and sunflower seed oil. In 1966, the City Council established a Parks Department which continues to operate today under the name of Parks & Recreation Administration (PRA). In 1907, the town had a population of just over 100 people. By 1920, Andrews had grown to 1,500 residents and it became an important cotton center. However, during World War II, the town was bombed by Japanese troops and its buildings were destroyed. After the war, the town declined as a commercial center but regained some importance as a bedroom community for Dallas. In recent years, however, Andrews has been losing its significance as a result of economic development in nearby Dallas.
