Andrews is a city in and the county seat of Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls– Plainview, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The economic engine for Andrews is agriculture, with production of livestock and crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and wheat; also services such as accounting and legal services. The first people to settle in what is now Andrews were local Native Americans who hunted game on the area's many hills and prairies. In 1824 Capt. Amos Webb founded Webb Station on a bend in the Brazos River about five miles east of present-day Andrewsburg. Captain Webb's station became an important stop on the Santa Fe Railway line that connected Dallas with El Paso. A post office called Andrews was established in 1829 by James Witherspoon Hatcher at a place near today's intersection of FM 527 and US 290 known then as Brushy Bottom Creek Road (now US 183). By 1840 there were twenty settlers living in what would become Andrews Township including three men named Andrew: Capt. Amos Webb (1824-1902), Drury Andrew (1800-1885), and John Andrew (1792-1876). The town site was surveyed by Jno Meeks c 1830 but not developed until after captain Webb’s death when developer James Witherspoon Hatcher bought land from him for $2 per acre . In 1836 Drury Andrew donated 160 acres southeast of town to build a new academy which he funded with his own money . Construction began on Academy Street which led to immediate growth due to demand for education by African Americans in this rural area . By 1840 there were fifty residents living within current bounds of present day Andrewstown limits including nine women – all white! In 1851 Jno Meeks organized an agricultural society which raised funds for building a stockyards northeast of town along FM 471/US 290 between present day Dairy Queen Drive & IH 10W just south of Highway 6
