Once known for its fruit orchards and local cattle ranching, many aspects of today's life in Andrews were started by individuals or groups that made a significant impact on the community and region: cowboy president George Winkler; banker Leroy Epperson; educator John Bogle (founder of Index Funds); and entrepreneur Frank Taft (father of Ulysses S. Grant). In recent years, Andrews has become known as an annual summer gathering spot for outdoor enthusiasts including BASE jumping, fly fishing, swimming and kayaking; as well as a center for arts and culture with restaurants, galleries and art festivals organized throughout the year.

Andrews was founded in 1879 by Andrew Jackson Andrews and his wife Rebekah. The town was named for General John A. Ferguson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Texas from 1893 to 1897. In 1911, Andrews incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military installations such as Fort Worth Air Force Base and San Antonio Air Force Base. In 1949, the City Council repealed its incorporation status and became an unincorporated community again until it reincorporated as a city in 1987 under the name of Andrewsburg when that community included portions of Baird and Midlothian counties both within Gregg County but outside ofDallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area limits
Andrews was founded in 1836 by General James H. Andrews, a brigadier general who had commanded the Texas Rangers. The town became an important trading and military post on the Red River during the Mexican-American War. In 1848, Andrews was named the capital of Texas, and it remained that way until 1859 when Austin was elected as the state's first governor.
