In Andrews, Texas, the first gunsmith in town was Nathan Hale who sharpened weapons for the military during the Mexican-American War. In 1875, a man named James Wesson opened a store on 5th Street which became one of the most important in town. A few years later, Johnnie Cochran and his brother opened their own store on 10th Street which became an even bigger success. Eventually, all of these businesses amalgamated to form The Gun Emporium which continued to be a major player in town until it closed its doors in 1984.

Andrews, Texas is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas, about 20 miles northeast of Houston. The population was estimated at 3,500 in the 2000 census. The village of Andrews was founded by Andrew Johnson in 1849 and grew rapidly due to its location on the southern fringe of the new Republic of Texas. By 1870, Andrews had a post office and steamboat landing. In 1881, the first telephone line was established in Andrews and by 1890 there were two banks, six stores and seventy-six homes. The railroad arrived in 1902 and within five years Andrews had become an important center for cotton production and cattle ranching. In 1916 the town became a US Army post with Fort Sam Houston as its primary garrison until 1945 when it reverted back to Vernon County status. Today, Andrews offers charming small townsfolk their own unique history - from its attractively designed downtown square complete with a gift shop/gallery/library to its contributing buildings from various periods (including several churches), this small Texan town has something for everyone interested in its rich history!
Andrews was named for General John Andrews, who fought in the Mexican-American War and had a military academy at Fort Worth. In 1881, Texas became a state, and Andrews became its first governor. He served until 1892. During his time as governor, Andrews made several important reforms to the state government including creating the Texas Department of Education and establishing statewide public schools.
