Amarillo, Texas is the capital of the U.S. state of Texas and is located in Midland County. The city was founded in 1867 by Americans Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk as Amarillo, Arizona Territory and it became a city on July 1, 1871 when it was annexed by Austin, Texas. Amarillo's population increased rapidly during World War I due to the munitions plant operated by Armour & Co., which employed up to 50% of the workforce. In 1925, Amarillo joined United States Military District 3 (Majors) and traces its history to that time as well. On January 6, 1931, Amarillo became an independent city under the administration of Mayor Waddell Coleman after City Council passed a resolution proclaiming itself an "independent municipality." Amarillo has experienced many changes over its history including becoming a major center for aviation with two airports (RAAF Base RAFonald Reagan and MFA Lamar Air Force Base), hosting several universities including Texas A&M University (now UT Arlington), Baylor University and Rice University; being home to numerous livestock ranches; becoming one of the largest cities in Texas without any limits on single-family dwellings until 1978; experiencing rapid growth following annexation by Austin; experiencing significant infrastructure development such as new highways, schools and hospitals over time; more recently seeing an increase in housing prices with properties now reaching into the millions of dollars; but also sustaining a strong economic engine with high job opportunities per capita as well as spending money on arts and culture

It is the largest city in Texas and the third-largest city in the US after Dallas and Houston. The name Amarillo comes from an Apache word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." The first permanent settler in what is now Amarillo was John Fayette who arrived on horseback on November 6, 1836. He named his new town after himself. soon other settlers followed suit including James K. Polk who arrived December 3rd of that year with his family. In 1837 pioneers John Waddell and George Lane also set up shop hereabouts and began to trade goods with the Apaches living around them for horses, hides, corn etc.. By 1840 there were 9 settlements operating in what would become Amarillo . In 1845 a post office called Ambrosia was established at present day crossing White Street nearpresentday Lamar Boulevard on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River which then served as a border between Mexico and Texas until it was ceded to America by Mexico in 1912 as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town developed rapidly due to its location on railroad lines connecting Marshall County with San Antonio de Bexar (the future Austin) across the river which made it easy to get goods into or out of Texas without having to go through Mexico City or Brownsville Crossing which took hours or days via wagon train! During World War II many people from Amarillo worked at various munitions plants throughout North America helping feed our troops while they fought overseas! Today some remaining businesses in town active such as Bluebonnet Bakery & Cafe operate long past their original dates even though most residents have retired! In recent years much progress has been made within local government uniting citizens under one roof thus providing more services available to all! Recently elections held for Mayor/Council members demonstrated this trend when 5 new members were elected defeating incumbent incumbents by wide margins! Things are looking up for this great community!

As Houston annexed much of West Texas during Reconstruction following World War II, Amarillo's position within TX declined somewhat but it did not go out entirely: It hosted several Lone Star State Fairs until 1961 and still has multiple events each year honoring Texan history & culture (e.g., rodeo) accentuating its role as "Texarkana Junction City". However today there is little commercial activity taking place within town limits due to continuing natural gas shortages wrought by The Bakken Field project >

On October 24, 1859, Amarillo was founded by John Wesley Powell and his party on the Brazos River. In 1876 it became a county seat. The first post office in Amarillo was established in 1894. The city of Amarillo was founded in 1907 and merged with the county in 1912.
