After numerous attempts to establish a settlement due to lack of water or other resources, including hiring men outfitted only for hunting expeditions rather than soil exploration or farming, George HSmith's town came into being on November 15th 1872 under the name "Amarillo" after General James Waco's victory over Texan forces at Palo Alto on October 16th that yearMG 1-9-1873 A public hearing was held on December 3rd by Commissioners Tom Whitehurst (Governor) Benjamine Lamar (Senator), John Kirby (Mayor) & Troup Denton Jr.( assessor) resulted in adoption of resolutions approving establishment of the town under three trustees viz: Capt GeoH Smith trustee Mr Whitehurst Mgr Lamar trustee John Kirby assessor 1st amendment readopted effective January 1st 1873 2nd amendment readopted effective February 14th 1873 3rd amendment readopted effective March 10th 1873 adopted Captain George H Smitty may have been among those who started development here back in '71...he later sold some land hereabouts back then too
