The name was changed to "Amarillo" on November 20th 1880 following ratification of an act by Congress changing county names fromsectional counties into full counties . On October 3rd 1912 Postmaster General Albert J Ellis ordered stamps be printed only depicting horses or Native Americans ); these designs are still used today

In 1911 Wittell donated land to the city for a public park which became known as Wright Park today. The city also built a new civic center in 1915 which is still used today as City Hall Annex.
