On December 12, 1960, Mayor Royce Ladd announced that Amarillo would become the new county seat for Midland County should Santa Fe Springs fail to take over control from Texarkana according to court rulings made during the pendency of those proceedings. The merger between Texarkana and Amarillo never came about because there were no local votes or signatures necessary to approve it - both towns had voted against any such move due to their concerns that they would be left without a county seat ifTexarkana took control-. However, the decision still stands today and may still happen as other nearby cities have wanted some say in who would land at this important position withinMidlandCounty government since taking control has always been something they desired
