In 1911, Amarillo became the first city in Texas to allow handguns. In 1932, the state of Texas banned handgun possession and sale. In 1951, a new law changed the name of Amarillo from "Anahuac" to "Amarillo". On November 3, 1958, an ordinance was passed that regulated gun ownership and sales within the city limits. The ordinance also prohibited carrying firearms on municipally-owned property. On December 12, 1959, another ordinance was passed that made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess or carry a handgun without a license from their municipality.

In addition to its rich history dating back to 1871 when settlers arrived in what is now Amarillo fromKansas City,[2] Amarillo also boasts some impressive modern amenities such as an NBA basketball team (the Mavericks),[3] multiple universities (University Park College,[4]), several professional sports teams (Amarillo Athletics Association football team; American Hockey League's Texarkana RoughRiders; United Soccer Leagues' Wichita Wolves),[5][6] high-end retail stores such as Macy's[7] or Neiman Marcus[8], movie theaters like Regal Cinemas,[9][10][11] orplexes,[12] entertainment complexes like Six Flags Over Texas[13][14][15], or even NFL Training Camps.[16] The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Amarillo were Spanish missionaries who founded Missions Santa Fe de la Frontera on February 17th, 1821.[17]:1 Mexican land grants followed soon after including Rancho San Antonio de las Animas on March 1st 1824.[18]:1 On January 8th 1836 US President Andrew Johnson signed the Bill entitled "An Act To Establish Districts Of Arizona And New Mexico" which created 7 counties out of lands east of the Rio Grande: Palo Pinto County on November 14th,[19]:1 Comanche County on December 10th,[20]:2 Nueces County on January 3rd 1861,[21]:3 Hudspeth County on May 26th 1861[22]- -All but Hudspeth were named for General John Hance Baylor who served with distinction during the Mexican–American War (1846-48) before he was appointed Inspector General for Border Affairs under Grant Administration responsible for all military activities along both sides of the borderland

In 1836, Revolver Company No 1 was founded in England by Sir John Browning with the goal of making revolver pistols using breech-loading cartridges instead of traditional muzzle-loading cartridges which required reloading every time you fired your pistol. Because Breech loading cartridges allowed for much more efficient firing than muzzle loading cartridges, these pistols became very popular among handgun users throughout Europe and America during the late 19th century. When World War I began, both sides had large stockpiles of firearms ready to be used should either side gain an advantage over the other through battlefield action or aggression (usually referred to as war). In order to ensure that all citizens were safe from potential violence during wartime, it was decided that all firearms should be registered with government authorities before they could be possessed or used without prior registration (known as “licensing”). This process known as “gun registration” helped keep weapons out of hands of those who would not follow safety guidelines while fighting in war; however, registrations did not always lead to successful enforcement due to often crooked characters being involved in firearm transactions

Amarillo was founded in 1876 by two brothers, George and John Amarillo. The city was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War.
