Alvin, Texas is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–Texarkana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alvin was founded in 1881 by J.D. Salinger and other pioneers as an agricultural settlement on the then-borderless Rancho Viejo de la Frontera Comanche Indian Reservation east of Wichita Falls. The name "Alvin" came from French explorer François Antoine de LaSalle's journal entry for October 17, 1795: "I passed through this place called Alvina and found it to be full of water which I supposed to be the river Aransas." The first post office in Alvin was established on November 6, 1881; it closed on July 15, 1902. Alvin was named for Captain John A. Alvin who had explored the area with General Antonio López de Santa Anna in 1829-30 and 1840-41 during Mexican colonial rule over what is now Johnson County and adjacent present day Kansas Territory. A wagon road enabling goods to be brought into Wichita Falls from points west passed through Alvin in the early 19th century; settlers organized themselves into families and businesses before schools were built or transportation became available to them beyond farmlands situated along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now US 75). Businessmen erected cotton ginories (eighteenth century), grist mills (nineteenth century), sawmills (twentieth century) and butter factories before railroads arrived around 1900 bringing jobs eastward within a generation of Alvina residents - many becoming millionaires overnight as entrepreneurs invested capital westward during America's Prominent Frontier period that spanned more than two centuries! In 1901 oil wells were drilled near present day Midland City; oil production began operations there in 1903 prompting an increase inresidential development including one thousand four hundred forty homes by 1907 while nearby Lamar led a drive for business interests downtown encouraging merchantships such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Joplin Grocery Company and Waco Mercantile Institution to establish stores outflowin
Alvin, Texas was founded in 1836 by Captain James Fenton and his crew of the American brig "Pioneer." The town was named for Alvin A. Stephenson, who had been lost at sea during the Mexican-American War. The town grew quickly and by 1849 it had a population of 100 people. In 1853, the townsite was acquired by General James P. Cooke and renamed Cookeville. In 1861, Confederate forces captured Alvin and burned down most of the town. Most of the residents were evacuated to Fort Worth before Union forces arrived to recapture the town on July 12th. There were no civilian casualties in this attack as all Union troops were killed or taken prisoner. The loss of Alvin destroyed any chance that Fort Worth could become a Confederate capital city; however, it did help lay the groundwork for later cities such as Dallas and Houston.
