In Alvin, Texas, on November 5, 1896, a group of local businessmen formed the Alvin Rifle and Pistol Club to improve the accuracy of pistols. soon after forming the club they began building their own rifles using components from other clubs. In 1903 the club moved its activities to a new facility and started calling themselves "The Alvin Rifle and Pistol Club." The first competitive matches were held in 1906 and 1907. From 1906-1910 the club won four out of six annual tournaments. In 1911 they won another tournament but were disqualified because two members had not turned in their equipment for inspection. In 1916 the club became formally incorporated as "The Alvin Rifle and Pistol Club Inc." They continued to win tournaments until 1924 when they lost all their money due to World War I hostilities. They resumed winning championships in 1927-1929 but then stopped again due to economic conditions during the Great Depression. In 1934 they again advanced to the final tournament but this time were unable to win because there was only one rifle left in each squad at that time (the Thompson gun)
Alvin is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Alvin is named after Oleander Harris, an early settler in the area. It was founded in 1879 by Englishmen and Germans who had come to the area during the cattle drives of the 1870s. The first post office was established in 1881. Alvin has been called "the Gateway to the Texas Hill Country." The town was originally known as "Harrison's Fort" because General William Tatum garrisoned there during his stay in Central Texas prior to his March 15, 1879 invasion of Mexico that led to Mexican independence from Spanish rule. This fort served as Tatum's headquarters until it burned down on February 24, 1886. A new fort was built and named for Colonel James Fenton Harrison shortly thereafter. In 1907, when Hidalgo County became part of El Paso County, Alvin lost its status as a village and reverted back to its original name of Harrison's Fort. currently over 1 million people live within 5 miles or so of Alvin!

Alvin, Texas was founded in 1836 by James F. Kling and his family. Kling came from a prominent family of German immigrants who had long been successful in the land industry. Kling's father, George, founded the town of Alvin in 1828 and it grew quickly with its population of around 100 people. The town was named after Alvin's brother John who, like many other members of the Kling clan, died at an early age. Alvin prospered for several years thanks to its advantageous location - on a bend in the Brazos River - and its close proximity to Sam Rayburn's plantations. However, by 1845 Alvin had experienced a decline as slave trading became more common andrik profits dwindled. The residents of Alvin petitioned their government for permission to break away from Texas in order to form their own country but were unsuccessful; however, this did not stop them from continuing to operate as a small town until their final days. The community is still commemorated through various local events such as annual celebrations which celebrate its founding or various scholarships fund-raisers which are attended by local students. In addition, a plaque marking the spot where Kling first erected his log cabin has been placed at the corner of FM 1536 and IH 35W.
