Alvin was founded in 1881 by African American pioneers who arrived from Louisiana and the Carolinas. The townsite that now includes Alvin was donated to the town by Humble Oil & Gas Company in 1907. The name "Alvin" comes from a Choctaw word meaning "a place where cotton can be grown." In 1990, Alvin became one of only two cities in Texas to receive a funding award from the World Bank for its efforts to reduce poverty and build human capacity. In 2006, the city also received money from the MacArthur Foundation for its work on climate change adaptation. A large portion of Alvin's economy revolves around agriculture; crops include corn, beans, soybeans, rice and other grains, fruits and vegetables, livestock (both beef and pork), hogs and poultry. A major employer in Alvin is Humble Oil & Gas Company which has been headquartered there since 1907. Alvin, Texas was founded in 1873 by settlers from Illinois. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Alvin grew rapidly and in 1892 it became the county seat of Fayette County. In 1907, the county was divided into two parts, and Alvin became one part of Hudspeth County.
