The other large plantation was located in Weatherford. The Alvin cotton plantation was started by James Fenton in 1892. It continued to be run by the Fenton family until it closed its doors in 1930. The Alvin plantation is considered one of the most successful cotton plantations in Texas. In 1915, Alvin became the home for what is now known as "the Alamo Gun Light Company". This company manufactured gunsights used by Texan soldiers during World War I and World War II. Their products were very popular with American troops and they remained active until their closure in 1966.

Polk (1824-1865), United States President during parts of that era when Texas was part of Mexico. In 1840, while living in Topeka, KS (now Wichita), Judge George Biddle organized a group of men to survey land grants east of Wichita Falls and west of Mission Valley on which they erected three houses: White House Station (later called Gadsden), Blacksmith shop and New Market Station. On July 4th, 1841 - two years after receiving his patent - Judge Biddle delivered an address to a meeting held at White House Station about his new settlement which he titled "Alvin". In November 1861 Ironclad USS Tennessee fought off an attack by Confederate forces off Alvin beachhead during the American Civil War off Louisiana coast; as result many citizens took up arms against their southern captors and Volunteer Rangers were raised to patrol waters around town On Valentine's Day 1863 Union soldier Nathan Bedford Forrest ambushed a convoy traveling through Alvin with artillery fire; all but one memberofthe convoy including seven women were killed or captured . Possessing little hope against such odds Alvin's only hope lay with Commodore David Dixon's fleet anchored offshore waiting to steam into shore when possible so as not to alarm civilians could they be evacuated without arousing suspicion

However, within a decade of its founding, Alvin faced harsh weather conditions that led to rampant deforestation and animal poaching throughout much of Eastern Travis County.
