Alvin, Texas is a small town in northeastern Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1881 by Fenton C. Hogg and his wife Sarah Jane Hogg. It was named after Alvin A. White, the first settler in the area. Alvin post office opened on December 21, 1881 and closed on March 3, 1902. The first store in Alvin was a general store run by David Smith and his brothers Isaac and Amos. They also raised chickens and other poultry products from their land while trading with nearby towns. In 1886 they built the first schoolhouse in the community which served until it burned down in 1903. In 1906 John Witherspoon moved to Alvin from Carthage Village near Dallas and started a grocery store there which became one of the most successful businesses in town until he sold it to Harry Witherspoon in 1958 for $775 cash - an event that has been chronicled by local journalists for many years now. Other early businesses include The Cottonmill (founded 1907), The Lumberyard (founded 1912), Mr. Dooley's Chinese restaurant (1915), Mrs.'s Keep Shop (1920), Jepson'S Store (1920) and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plant (1925). Boyd Witherspoon ran a feed business called "Fodder" from 1928-1972; it had a large impact on local agriculture as well as livestock production throughout northeast Archer County In 1934 Gertrude Moss founded her own clothing company: Moss Clothing Corporation which continued until 2001 when it went out of business due to competition from online retailers . On October 15th 1935 two men walked off their job at Consolidated Gas Light & Coke Company west of town after refusing to give up their union certification card; this led to what is known as the "Watchers' walk". This incident helped spark anti-trust action against Consolidated over its control of retail electric services within northeast Archer County
Alvin, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Texas Rangers. The town became a important center for cattle and sheep ranching. Alvin experienced significant growth during the oil boom of the 1920s and 1930s. The town was destroyed by an oil pipeline explosion in 1969, but has since recovered and is home to a variety of businesses and cultural attractions.
