This land was part of Rancho Guadalupe which had been given to Juan Rodriguez de Arreguin by Pánfilo de Narváez on November 3, 15 adhesive Miles west of San Antonio along Friult Creek (now known as Old Utopia Road). Under Mexican rule this area had been part of Nacogdoches County prior to its annexation by Austin on December 16, 1847 In 1886, Judge Edward Smith became head judge of Travis County after being elected over candidate Jethro Gibbs due to concerns that Gibbs would reduce court jurisdiction within Austin's limits while serving as District Attorney for Travis County In 1896 Judge Smith resigned from office after charges were brought against him alleging bribery On July 5th 1897 citizens organized themselves into a town committee under Mayor Holden with Ted Walls leading the organizing effort In 1898 City Councilwoman Nannie Peckham became mayor pro tempore After 1900 City Councilman Sam Houston replaced Walls on councilmember duties In 1901 Alfred Bigham became deputy city marshal For many years no elections were held because it was then considered unnecessary because all members were appointed by Governor George Hogg
Alvin, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Wichita people. The town was named for General Zachariah Cooke, who led an army against the Texan forces during the Mexican-American War. Alvin enjoyed a brief period of prosperity in its early years, but then declined rapidly in population and economic significance after railroads arrived in the area. In 1924, the town was razed to make way for a new highway.
