From 1916-1975, the Alton Rifle Range operated under the guidance of an Executive Director who managed all aspects of its operations including operation, maintenance and improvement of its facilities. In 1975, responsibility for running the range passed from the Executive Director to a Boardof Directors who continue to manage and operate it today as they do with other local rifle ranges
Alton, Texas (population: 21,362) is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of McAllen County. The population was 27,851 at the 2010 census. It lies on both sides of the Rio Grande River, about 110 miles (175 km) east of Mexico City and 190 miles (310 km) west of Austin. The first Europeans to visit Alton were exploring what is now McAllen County in 1843 when they discovered an area which they called "Borrego Springs." In 1845, General Antonio López de Santa Anna made his way through this area and named it after Lieutenant-Governor José Borrego who had financed his army during the Mexican War of Independence. Alton was founded by John Sitton in 1846 as a small town on a leased piece of land near present day Interstate 10 and US 68. It became a city in 1907 when it merged with neighbouring Fort Worth. In 1915 Alton annexed part of Starr County which included Matagorda Bayou along with much smaller towns like San Angelo and New Braunfels before becoming one municipality again in 1931 under the name Alton Municipal District umbrella with all its constituent towns joining together into one entity for statistical purposes only; however this merger did not take place until 1932 due to insistence from individual municipalities that their own laws still applied within their respective districts even if they formed part of another municipality or district. On March 16, 1937 Alton's incorporation as an official city followed by annexation by nearby Fort Worth gave it its current metropolitan area designation today!
