Alton, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. Alton is part of the Abilene-Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1881, a post office was established at Alton and it remained in operation until 1903. It was then renamed to Midland and again in 1907. The Post Office moved to its current location in 1911 and stayed there until it closed in 1969. The name "Alton" originated from an early settler's claim that he had seen three huge white tails on a hill just outside the town limits.
Alton was founded in 1881 by a small group of settlers, led by Captain John Nalbandian. At the time, it was one of the most isolated towns in Texas. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 200 people. In 1902, Alton became the capital of newly created Denton County. However, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, due to increasing economic problems within Denton County, Alton began to experience Decline followed by Fall. Today, it is an economically depressed community with few amenities or opportunities available to residents.
