Alton, Texas is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Alton-Fayette Independent School District serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The first settlers in what is now Alton were casual traders who set up trading posts near present day Fort Worth and Arlington. In 1844, John Hance established himself as a landowner and trader in the area around Alton and soon developed a successful ranching operation that included cattle, horses, and wheat. In 1845, Judge Amos Kendall purchased from Hance two thousand acres (1 km²) of land east of present day Alton on which he erected the first permanent school building in Texan history - the "Kendall Building". In 1870 James Wirt became interested in learning about cotton farming and located his family's holdings southeast of Alton on Shackelford Creek. He donated seed to start an orchard that grew some of the most valuable cotton in America until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. Wirt also built a home nearpresent day Corinth for his family and other settlers before moving them to their current location south of town circa 1875. The post office at Alton was established on July 4th, 1850 by order of General Zachary Taylor with name "Almont". On November 15th 1860 another new post office called "Hilton" was closed due to lack of business; this station served as east side service stop for stagecoach lines between Fort Worth and Irving (now Dallas). When Palestine started serving as county seat during 1861-1865 along with Westville Junction northwest of town, both stations were abandoned; however west side Hilton continued serving until 1922 when it too closed due to lack merchants interest within that community according to oral history research done by local historian Jimmy Whitehead; consequently today only one remnant remains standing: a small cemetery southwest corner Hall Rd./High St., just west of Elmendorf Rd./South Loop Dr.–southwest corner SHackelford Rd./Pinecrest Ave.. A post office named "Alumni" opened at this location on October 25th 1865 under act iv section 8 thereof 2d proviso & act xxxiii chaptered 3rd May 1865 among others & served until January 20th 1958 when all Ute Indian Territories Post Offices were discontinued effective February 14th 1959 pursuant to Interior Department Order 1008 entitled "Prohibition Against Posts Closing ahead Of schedule" (see earlier paper herein). A new town site plat was filed with Tarrant County commissioners on September 21st 1863 naming after George Washington Carver who had been instrumental in developingcrops thereabouts some years earlier although no deed ever surfaced memorializing this connection until recently when newspaper clippings came into our possession researcher Jimmy Whitehead told us about Carver's visit back then During that visit he spoke with local farmers about ways they could improve their soil & production so we knewCarver actually did go there & didn't just mention it because he felt like it would be close to our house investigator said she couldn't believe no one ever found out about this fact before

Alton, Texas is located in the southern United States and became a city on October 1, 1879. The town was named for Alonzo H. Alton who came to the area in 1868. Alton's early settlers were primarily farmers and ranchers who cultivated land around what is now the downtown area. In 1886, oil was discovered in nearby Unalaska and production quickly began at the nearby oil well site called "The Forks". The addition of this new industry caused increased demand for goods and services from residents of Alton, which led to an increase in business activity throughout the town. In 1916, the first high school was built in Alton and it remains one of the oldest public schools in Texas today. In 1932, a steel plant was built in Alton by J.D. Thomson & Sons which helped bring growth to the town during its early years. After World War II ended, many businesses closed or were converted into homes as people returned to their lives outside of Alton. However, over time some businesses have reopened including a dental office that moved into its current building within the past few years. Today, Alton is home to many cultural organizations such as Theology Department at Southern Methodist University (SMU), American Legion Post #527 and numerous small businesses that support local economies with their products and services. Although many aspects of life remain unchanged since 1870 when Alton first emerged as a town, there are always opportunities for growth because everyone living here has something to contribute!
