Despite this decline, progress has been made since then for both black and white residents alike: In 2013–14, median household income was $60,574 compared to $39,723 for whites and $27, basket for Hispanics/ Latinos combined; real estate prices have increased rapidly while job opportunities have diminished since the Great Recession ended in 2009; low-income housing developments are becoming more common due to increasing suburbanization around town; and education opportunities are improving as well – Alton High School offers excellent public education while also having several thousand students enrolled each fall at local colleges like Baylor University and Rice University among others.

The first business opened in Alton was a grocery store operated by James Hickey run out of his house on Main Street between Second and Third Streets until 1886 when he leased space from J C Meyers & Son which continued until 1893 when they moved into their current building at Seventh Street and IH10 just east of downtown Alton which has been their home since 1903!
