Alton is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 699 at the 2010 census. Alton is part of the Midland, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Alton was first settled by Texans in 1836 and named for General Marcy Alston, commander of the Texan forces who unsuccessfully pursued Mexico during the Mexican–American War. A post office called "Alton" was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it closed in 1901. In 1881, a group of Methodist ministers founded what would be known as Mount Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church on land that had been donated by James Denton. The Reverend John Neely Wright served as church president from 1893 to 1899 and Creek Indian Agent William Tatum served as pastor from 1902 to 1910. In 1907, Alton residents voted to incorporate as a town. The new community prospered thanks to its water supply from Willow Creek and its location just outside of Midland on the banks of the Brazos River. During World War II, Alton played an important role in providing military supplies to the war effort through its production of munitions and engines used by both Axis and Allied forces alike. Thanks also to its proximity to San Antonio and Corpus Christi, Alton became an important hub for trade with those cities during wartime times. In 1948, when Midland proper merged with other municipalities within Hidalgo County due to population growth within that area – including Poston – Alton chose not to join those mergers but rather remain independent. In recent years, many businesses have opened up around town square which has made it more vibrant than ever before; including several restaurants (including Covet), two bars (the Irish Pub & Grill and Joe's Pizza), three small convenience stores (Granada Variety Store & Donut House), two health clubs (Healthy Living Center & Wellnessplex), one retail mall (MallSouthwest) - all while still being close enoughto downtown for shopping or dining options if desired.
