In 1879, Alton, Texas was founded by brothers James and John A. Marshall. The town was named for Captain Samuel Fenton of the United States Cavalry who had died in a skirmish near the town on July 4th, 1876. The Fort Worth and Dallas Railway arrived in 1886 and when it did, Alton became an important stop on the line. The town's first store was built in 1889 and by 1912 there were 10 businesses in Alton. The first firearm hat company to be established in Alton was J&J Hat Company which opened a hat factory in 1903. In 1906, the company changed its name to Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation after acquiring that rights from Henry Winchester Incorporated of Boston MA. After World War I, Smith & Wesson produced firearms for both the US military and law enforcement agencies around the world. From 1934 until 2003, Smith & Wesson manufactured revolvers under license from Colt corporation (now part of Rock Island Arsenal). This deal allowedSmith & Wesson to operate as a major player in revolver manufacturing outside of North America for the first time ever. In 1933, Kingman Manufacturing Company merged with Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation forming what is now known as Springfield Armory Corporation (SAC). From 1935 until 1982 SAC operated out of the old Socknology Warehouse at 3200 NW 65th Street located next door to Boeing’s Phantom Works plant; production shifted to new facilities at 6600 NW 2nd Street between 1984 and 1988 due to fire restrictions at Boeing's plant following World War III. In 1992 BATFE decided not pursue prosecution againstSmith & Wesson over their licensee agreement with Colt which ended self-production by Smith&Wesson outside of North America effective October 1st 1991 However BATFE still regulates handguns made by Smith&Wesson pursuant to this agreement through their Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) program Alton began as a small farming community situated between Wichita Falls on one side and Amarillo on the other approximately 25 miles west of Wichita Falls on Ulysses Road northeast of present day Springdale Mall off I-10 en route to Amarillo via Ulysses Rd., Kiambu Rd., Neches Ln., Waller Creek Rd., Pecan Hwy., cattle drives took goods eastward along Kiambu Road past Tomball before turning southeast onto Ulysses Road past Springdale Mall onto present day Alton Rd.. James A Marshall started trading goods from his farmstead into town circa 1889 when he erected a store front building adjacent to current day FPSH headquarters

In 1881 Fenton donated land to build an agricultural college which became Baylor University; however, construction did not begin until 1888 due to financial difficulties caused by US Civil War II. A year later Alverson acquired additional land from Fenton which made up today's downtown area including Harrison Avenue and Main Street NE which served as the cornerstone for Alverson's new courthouse (now City Hall). In 1907 Houstonians J C Whitehead and I H Freeman purchased 2/3rds interest in Baylor University from President James M McAllister for $10 per share making it an independent institution separate from Houston universities such as Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine while still under university control. In 1915 Dr J C Whitehead became president emeritus at Baylor University followed by I H Freeman who served until his death in 1951; both men are buried at Harvard Cemetery northeast of downtown Alton proper near Third Street NW corner Park Lane SEZ between Sixth Ave SW & Seventh Ave NW
