Allen is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 17,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tarrant County. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Arkansas River forms much of the border between Allen and Grand Prairie; its course bisects both cities just north of Interstate 10 (I-10W). The river was named for Colonel James A. Allen who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of New Mexico from 1881 to 1886 before moving to Texas to become a cattle rancher and politician. The main thoroughfare running through town is I-10E/W which provides access to this national highway system - making it an important commercial node for the entire region. In 1865, settlers arrived in what would eventually be known as Allen around what is now western Todd County; they were led by John Hance who founded Hanceville on November 8th, 1865 while serving as a member of the Texas House of Representatives fromDallas Township #1 (now Plano). In 1870 John Waco started hosting cattle drives up into central Oklahoma across Frome Creek and over US 67 until he became stranded there with his herd late one night near present day Wichita Falls when bad weather forced him to turn back home early that morning; his men followed suit soon after setting out for their next destination only to find themselvestracking down Waco's herd all week long! Pushed by public pressure, Congress passed an act on December 1st 1870 providing for a commission chaired by General George Aiken to investigate irregularities surrounding cowboy trading posts within Indian Territory - including those inside Kansas City proper! On January 22nd 1871 Captain Edward Stiles reported finding five bodies buried along Frome Creek about due east (modern Wichita Falls)of present day Denton Road leading northwest towards Ft Worth! By this time news had spread throughout eastern Kansas that someone was looking for buffalo meat so investigations began right where they left off! Captured ranch hands implicated Capt’n Stiles & several others were tried & executed but public outcry compelled President Ulysses S Grant To pardon all involved 3 years later on February 2nd 1875!!!
