In 1907, a railroad track ran through the town and it became pronounced "ALLEN" by residents rather than "PINE BLUFF". In 1959, Allen hosted the Miss America pageant which took place at UST Stadium on October 15th. This event helped to promote college education for women and led to more female entrepreneurs starting businesses throughout Arizona that year. In 2002-2003, there were two floods that occurred within about three weeks each which destroyed over ninety percent of all homes in Pima County as well as damaging or destroying many other structures including churches and schools; both rains were considered disastrous due to their severity. After these devastating events many people worked together to help rebuild what had been damaged while still preserving antique items and cultural artifacts from those affected such as Route 66 signage that still remains today on some property near downtown Allen where Route 66 once crossed into Texas can be seen
