Allen was founded by John Wesley Allen in 1827. Allen was the first post office in Allen County and the first store on the site of present day Allen. In 1845,Allen became the county seat of Allen County. The early settlers were primarily Baptist missionaries who established churches and schools. By 1860, most of the settlers had departed for other parts of Texas and only a few families remained in what is now known as downtownAllen. In 1865, General Sam Houston arrived in Texas to lead an army against Mexico and he found that much of central Texas was empty because most of the Texans had left for Mexico. Houston ordered his general staff to start constructing a road from San Antonio eastward through central Texas to connect with Mexican territory west of Austin. The construction was so extensive that it required ten miles of new earthworks each day to complete it, making Allen one of the most heavily populated areas in Texas at that time. The town grew rapidly around its military installation and commercial district, becoming one of the largest centers for trade in centralTexas during this period . The growth led to development along both sides of Highway 6 which currently forms partof Interstate 35W between Austin and Dallas; today's city limits extend well beyond those original boundaries . Many buildings still standing from this period can be seen just south or west of I-35W near Slaughter Road (now US 183). Shackleton's Store building – located at current day Slaughter Road and I-35W – is significant as it served as headquarters for many early businesses operating within Allan including Waddell & Company grocery store, J R Hogg lumberyard, Post Office Depot (later American Telephone & Telegraph), Mrs Tippetts bakery/cafeteria/restaurant (later Longhorn Cafe) Some features common throughout these establishments are an ovens on either side fronting onto a small alley off street which served as kitchenette; sawmills downwind from alley ran into lumber used in construction; turned water wheel powered by horse power drove pumpkins Los Angeles oranges grown on property next door

It is one of two cities located inDallas County and one of four cities located within Arlington County. The other three are Irving, Arlington Heights, and Mesquite.
