Allen is a small town in Texas, located about 120 miles northwest of Dallas. The community was founded in 1881 by the Nebraska-born John A. Allen and his family. It is named for General James K. In 1911, businessman Wanda Ladd donated land to build what is now known as "Ladd Park" on which she built her home and various other residences including an auto dealership and movie theater complex called "The Majestic", which still stands today. In 1924, then-Mayor Lamar J. Hennepin inaugurated Highway 60A (now I-635) through what is nowAllen; it became a main route through the community after being completed across sections of central Texas during World War II. In 1951, following an interview with General James K Polk Jr., local resident Clarence Higginbotham designed plans for what would become Memorial Hall - one of two buildings in town (the other being First Baptist Church) dedicated to serve as both cultural icons for allenites and tourist attractions; memorial hall remains one such attraction today despite having been extensively renovated several times since its dedication more than 50 years ago In 1984, following annexation by Arlington County from Travis County over disagreement among area residents about whether or not annexation should be approved given Arlington's larger population density relative to that nears neighboring towns such as Fort Worth/Grosse Pointe Park/Dallas/Houston etc.; Allen voters passed an ordinance approving annexation via referendum but portions of Arlington County remain within Allan while those parts annexed were set off into Travis County . As part of this arrangement between counties resulting from this dispute ; Arlington's portion of Allan includes most notably Interstate 35E which runs concurrently through both counties before splitting off into their respective freeways eastbound / westbound near Loop 610 interchange

The first settlers in this area were two families who came overland from Missouri in 1836. They named their new settlement "Allen" after General David Allen who had helped defeat Mexican forces at the Battle of Buena Vista on November 6, 1835. The original post office was established in 1840 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, the USArmy built Fort Worth Road to link Ft Worth with Wichita Falls and Denton County. Allen became an important military garrison for miles around and saw its peak during World War II when it housed up to 12000 troops. The post office closed on December 1, 1951 due to budget cuts that coincided with the Korean War; however, Fort Worth Road still remains as a major east-west route today connecting Amarillo and Lubbock. The town of Allen experienced significant growth after statehood when oil exploration began there in 1938; gas stations and other businesses quickly sprung up all around what is now Main Street downtown which led to an increase in population from just under 1000 residents at the time of statehood to nearly 2700 by 1950 thanks largely to waves of migration from surrounding counties and ranching operations following oil discoveries statewide. However, rapid gentrification following energy independence has led to increased traffic congestion and decline in retail sales since 2000 while residential development has resumed along Main Street near Interstate 20W; this has drawn attention away from downtown which remains one of the most vibrant areas within Amarillo/IPHONE–Lubbock north of Loop 610E/.
