Alice, Texas is a small town in Hearne County, Texas. It is located in the Midwestern United States and bedroom community of Austin. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. Alice was founded by Captain James Hays on November 15, 1876 as a post office and store on the south side of what is now US 83 near present day Bowie Creek. The first settler in Alice was John Fenton who moved there from Nashville on October 14, 1877. He and his family homesteaded about two-thirds of acres in what is now Alice. The most important event that happened in Alice occurred when it became known to the world that America had won its independence from Great Britain on April 4th, 1861 with victory at Fort Sumter. This news reached Alice early on May 10th and soon citizens were celebrating with song and dance throughout town square where Captains Hays presided over an Independence Day barbecue which included apple pie for dessert! On July 5th 1860 Captain James Hays married Sarah Sessions (nee Dickinson) of Texarkana and they founded their home here. Pushed out of Arkansas by secessionists during the American Civil War they settled permanently in Texas around 1865 after unsuccessfully appealing to Mexico for protection from Confederate forces within their state borders. They opened a general store here before moving to what is now Jasper Street just east of US 183 two years later where they continued running a mercantile business until their death in 1893 leaving behind an impressive legacy including: 1) The opening of one of the first modern hospital complexes west of the Mississippi River; 2) creation/maintenance/operation (1910-1920)of three large water systems supplying all parts of TX; 3) construction (1897-1900)of four miles long paved road between Hereford Junction & Alice Springs serving as one means by which farmers could move goods into TX from all directions; 4) Donation (1901-1902), along with land bordering Arthur Avenue to become part of present day Austin Airport

Alice, Texas was founded in 1901 by John Wesley Powell and his wife, Alice. The town was named after Alice's sister, who had died young in 1892. The first post office in Alice opened on October 6 of that year. The town rapidly grew and by 1907 it boasted a population of over 100 residents. By 1916 the population had reached 1,500 and by 1923 it had grown to 5,000 people. In 1925 the state legislature approved a bill establishing the Alice Municipal Airport which would later become world-renowned for its ability to handle large airplanes. The airport quickly became one of the most important economic engines for the town as it helped to support local manufacturing companies and numerous other businesses sprang up around it. The airfield continued to play an important role in the town’s economy until 1966 when it was closed due to budget cuts within the State government. However, despite its closure, Alice has never been able to forget her roots – she continues to thrive thanks to her rich history and vibrant community spirit.
