Alice, Texas is a small town located in the Johnson County area of east Texas. The population was 3,521 at the 2000 census. Alice's history began in 1885 when cattle were able to reach the town from long distances by means of a stagecoach. The first post office in Alice opened in 1888. The townspeople started building their own homes in 1903 and 1906. In 1923, Alice had its first school and it soon became an important community because it served as the local drop-off point for students going to school in other nearby towns. In 1951, Alice had its first water well and then installed its first public works department which included streetlights and a water main. By 1970, Alice's economy was based on agriculture with over 60% of the population involved in that activity. By 2010, however, there were only 9 residences left in Alice while most businesses have either closed or relocated since then due to changing economic conditions throughout East Texas (e.g., oil production).

The courthouse building designed by George Prentice Costello stands on Main Street and was built in 1911; the post office building located on Elm Street also dates back to that time (1911). Both buildings are now used as private homes. The original schoolhouse which served as both a daycare and high school until 1957 has been turned into a museum open to the public since 1978. Alice has been home to many famous people over the years including Drayton McLennan who was one of the pioneers of petroleum production in Texas and later became head of Shell Oil Corporation; Governor John Connally who was shot while campaigning for re-election in 1968; Congressman Lloyd Doggett who represented TX-1 from 1993-2001; US President George H W Bush during his presidency from 2001-2009; singer Kris Kristofferson and actor Tom Hanks who were both born here before moving on to other parts of America.
