Alice, Texas is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census.[1] Alice was founded in 1875 by James H. Bell and named for Alice of England. The post office at Alice was established in 1885.[2] The original settlers who arrived in what is now Alice were farmers from Kentucky and Virginia. By 1830 all of present-day Johnson County had been organized as part of the Mexican War district known as East Texas Province. In 1835 James H. Bell came to the region with his family and started trading goods with Native American tribes living along the Brazos River. He homesteaded land around what is now Alice on July 1, 1875. A year later he donated 260 acres (100 ha) to the city of Austin for use as a public square which still stands today. In 1886 Jens Jensen opened his livery stable near present day Main Street and trading Post Road (now US 183). This early business activity helped support both Alice's growth as a town and also its importance within Johnson County during that time period; Jensen did not start operating his business until after the county seat had moved from Galveston to Austin proper in 1870.] The first school building in Alice was built on what is now First Avenue West about 1888-89 by Mrs. Fenton Higgins[3]. That same year an addition was made to School District #2 which included two rooms on the second floor for classroom use when needed while also accommodating storage space above ground level for instructional materials such as books and tools used by teachers during their classes.] In 1903 there were only one room left in District 2’s new school building so it burned down; this event led to the construction of a new school building on FM 1565 just south of downtownAlice that still stands todayaces education has always played an important role in this small community.-Today many people here call themselves “Aliceans” because they have ancestry from Scotland or England
