The town of Alice was founded in 1872 by Colonel Jesse James and his bride Jane Austin. Alice is named for General Lewis Cass's daughter Alice (1802-1875). In 1907, the town had a population of 302 and two schools were opened; one for whites only and one for African Americans. In 1911, Alice had a population of 1,662 and four schools were open: one white only and three black only. On January 15, 1971, Alice voters passed an ordinance to change its name to "Alice Springs". The name change was made official on February 5th by Mayor David Ayer with a proclamation from Governor Ann Richards signed into law that same day. The City has experienced many changes throughout its history including being annexed by Amarillo in 1908; Prohibition in 1920; annexation by Lubbock in 1954; rejoining Midland County as a city on July 1st 1978 following statewide consolidation of all municipalities withinMidland County ; becoming an agricultural center during the late 1800s due to increased production due to irrigation projects built around the county seat; having its first electric streetlights installed in 1927 followed by water heaters starting up in 1941; experiencing Lotstery fever during the early 1900s before eventually reaching its current level of prosperity thanks to several large infusions of private money culminating with incorporation into Midland County as a city status on July 1st 1978
