Alice, Texas is a small town in Midland County, Texas. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area. Alice was founded in 1867 by David Fenton and platting out what is now its downtown business district on land that he acquired from the Comanche Nation. In 1907, Alice became the first community in Midland County to have electricity produced by solar energy with a system installed by then- Mayor John Ladd. The city has seen an increase in growth over recent years due to its location within easy access to major highways and its position as a bedroom community for Austin and Round Rock. A number of popular tourist destinations are located nearby including Lamar University campus, Will Rogers Park, and Alice's Bluegrass Casino Resort & Hotel. Alice, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 100,536 at the 2010 census. Alice was founded in 1881 by Edwin H. Smith and named for his daughter Alice. It became a municipality in 1907 and was incorporated as a city in 1912. The current mayor is Annise Parker and the City Council consists of 11 members. The city is located on the edge of Dallas County on Interstate 35W between Irving and Mesquite. The first Permanent Anglo-American Settlement in what would become Dallas County took place on October 3, 1871 when Daniel WinnIPx met with James Caldwell and David Evans at the old Weldon Springs Ranch near present day Fair Park to negotiate land purchases that would form the nucleus of what would become Alice. At this time WinnIPx owned about 5 square miles (12 km²) south of where Dallas now stands; Caldwell had bought 8 square miles (20 km²) north ofDallas from John Wesley Hardin within weeks earlier. In 1872, Alice's founders set up shop around their home "The White House" which they shared with their three wives: Lillie Lewis (1848-1927), Mary Anna Whitney (1849-1924), and Martha Webb (1850-1920). A year later they erected a frame building which served as their homes' Market Place restaurant until 1901 when it burned down due to an over heating problem; market days were Sundays during that timeframe. In 1886 Alice's Postmaster General Rufus Earle sold them 2 acres (8 hectares) east of downtown for $2 per acre ($10/ha). This parcel became known as Earle Street today after him - currently one of two streets running through downtown Alice & concurrent with IH35W! Alice began its journey towards becoming an official city on July 1st 1912 when voters approved passage of Ordinance No 1092 “An ordinance providing for the organization and government of said town” by a vote of 6 to 2 with Mayor Harry Biddle voting no because he felt that incorporation intoDallas county would be too much work & not worth it financially – he instead directed his deputies to continue working under state auspices to unify all aspectsof local government under one roof (& eventually did!). On December 12th 1913 Mayor Biddle issued proclamation formally designating Alice as a City Within A City status expelling any doubt that anything outside OFA jurisdiction couldn't take place without prior approval from DART! On January 1st 1914 Mayor Biddle passed an ordinance instituting water services within our boundaries diverting River Trinity from Sam Rayburn Boulevard thru presently existing alleyways just west side Of Main Street hydrant access keyed at corner lot entrance street level crossing then continuing easterly along alleyways leading into interior neighborhoods thence across railroad tracks Edgar Mears Avenue onto namesake mainStreet connection thereto & finally terminating at intersection w/ 19th Ave SE recent additions also include large open space east side lots leased or donated by citizens including Playa Vista Golf Course
Alice, Texas was founded in 1836 by John F. Smith as the town of Alice, after he and his family arrived from Kentucky. The first settlers were two families from Illinois, who named their new community "Alice" for the wife of one of them. The town grew quickly with new arrivals, and by 1840 it had a population of 100 people. By 1846 Alice had a population of 1500 people and became a city. In 1865 Alice was annexed to Dallas County, Texas and renamed Arlington Heights; in 1967 it was again annexed to Dallas County and renamed Oak Cliff.
