In 1902, Alice joined the United States as part of the new country and during World War I (1914-18) it served as an airfield for American bombers based in Mesquite. In 1919-20, Alice became a city and through annexation by Fort Worth created its own city council with a total population of 653 residents. During World War II (1939-45), Alice served as headquarters for Headquarters Squadron Two (HS2) of the Eighth Air Force which flew bombing missions over Japan from Okinawa airport. During that time period also, several businesses were established including Jiffy Lube convenience store and Pembroke Paper Mill on Haskell Avenue. After World War II ended, Alice experienced rapid growth due to automobiles becoming more common and development along Haskell Avenue led to increased job opportunities for locals and newcomers alike. However, economic decline throughout the 1970s caused significant social problems such as poverty and gun violence which have persistently plagued the community ever since. In recent years however, efforts have been made to revitalize Alice through various programs such as arts & culture initiatives; healthy eating initiatives; anti-crime measures; access to education; legal assistance; etc., which are slowly but surely beginning to bear fruit within its boundaries.
