Alice, Texas is located in the heart of the Lone Star State. The small town has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. In 1851, Alice was founded by two families from Michigan who were looking for a place to settle. The town rapidly grew and became a vital part of the local economy. It was also known for its firearms production and ammunition. In 1916, Alicebecame an Ammunition Licensee with the National Rifle Association (NRA). This affiliation helped increase production in the town and help support military recruitment. The town continued to produce ammunition until 1970. Additionally, Alice was home to one of the last factory-produced AR-15 rifles. Today, Alice boasts a variety of businesses that support its namesake community: restaurants, retail stores, schools, and more. The town is also home to several museums which offer exhibits on local history and ammo production.

Alice, Texas was founded by James H. White in 1857 as a cattle ranch and trading post on the Brazos River. The town was named for Alice, the daughter of his first settler, John A. White. In 1890, Alice became the county seat of Fayette County after it was chosen by a vote of residents of the original town. The county seat moved to Austin in 1912. The early years of Alice were difficult for the town because there were no riverside settlements nearby and trade with other parts of Texas depended on traveling downriver to Corpus Christi or Mexico City. However, over time Alice grew into an important center for agriculture and commerce in Fayette County and even served as a hub for wagon trains moving goods from eastern Texas to San Antonio during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1907, white settlers in Alice numbered only two people; however, by 1925 their population had grown to nearly 10,000 and they developed what is now known as downtown Alice into one of the most significant downtowns in Texas. In 1928, when newly elected President Herbert Hoover designated Fayette County as one of five US counties that would be affected by federal housing programs called "Operation Alamo," many businesses within downtown Alice closed their doors because they could not afford to put up new roofs or windows without government assistance. As a result of this program, many small businesses within downtownAlice went out Of Business or failed completely due to lack of funding; however, some major businesses such as Coca Cola still thrived until recently thanks to government subsidies available through HUD's Section 8 program which provides affordable housing units exclusively to low-income families residing in public housing developments throughout America’s largest city limits). As part of HUD's Section 8 policy called "Housing First", authorities began demolishing old buildings in central Alice so that new homes could be built on vacant lots previously used for agricultural purposes; this project eventually became known as "The Greenbelt Project". The Greenbelt Project represents a turning point for Downtown Alice since it allowed more people accessto valuable commercial properties located within walking distanceof each other insteadof having them scattered around an open countryside whereaccessibility was limited or nonexistent. Today much property withinthe shopping district adjoining Interstate 15 has been preserved including several blocks adjacentto Main Street where several large department stores once stood including Kressons convenience store which closed its doors back in 1984 but remains abandoned today despite being listed on the National Register OF Historic Places .
