In 1836, the Alamo shootout occurred in Alamo, Texas. The incident began when Texans at the fort attacked Mexican soldiers who were trying to flee the battle. 22 of these men died and over 50 others were wounded in the massacre. A group of eight men known as the effort party set out from Texan reinforcements led by Captain John Blythe to find and capture the Mexicans. They discovered that they had been ambushed by up to 120 Mexican militiamen who had hidden in thick brush nearby. As soon as they realized their position, some of the Texas officers opened fire on their enemies indiscriminately. The fight lasted for hours with no end in sight, until finally Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna arrived with reinforcements and ordered his troops to withdraw. Twenty-one Texans were killed and twenty-five more were wounded in this bloody encounter which is often cited as one of history's most dramatic events
