The Alamo was a battle fought between the Republic of Texas and Mexican forces on April 6, 1836. The battle resulted in the death of almost 400 Texans andMexican casualties amounting to over 1,200 dead. The Alamo is also known for its symbolic significance as the place where local heroes Sam Houston and Antonio López de Santa Anna met their ends. In 1898, during World War I, the Alamo was used by General John F. Pershing's American Expeditionary Force as an observation post. Today, it is open to the public as a museum.
In 1792, Spanish colonists arrived in what is now Alamo City (Alamosa), Texas. They were followed by Mexican settlers in 1800 who founded San Antonio de Bexar County (now part of San Antonio). In 1836, Mexico ceded Texas to the United States after being defeated at the Battle of Pueblo del Rio Grande. On April 6th of that year American troops under General Sam Houston attacked Mexican positions at the Alamo Mission complex near present-day downtown San Antonio; with little opposition from Mexican defenders stationed insidethe walls, Houston's force proceeded to storm these positions and capture several Texan soldiers before withdrawing without loss or casualty.
