In 1836, the Texas Rangers were organized to protect Austin and its citizens. The Rangers were led by Captain John B. Hogg and his lieutenant, James Bowie. In 1838, Captain Hogg was promoted to Major and given command of the 1st Regiment of Texas Rangers. The 1st regiment was made up of men from Alamo Heights, which had been captured by the Texan army on July 2nd, 1835. On November 3rd, 1840, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Ranger units in Texas to retreat into Mexico City due to a new Mexican government that had replaced the old one. On November 10th, 1840 General Santa Anna called for all Ranger units in Texas to march back into Austin with their weapons and ammunition following them. Aftermath of Battle at Alamo Heights When General Santa Anna learned about what happened at Alamo Heights he ordered his forces there to launch an attack against the Rangers who had barricaded themselves inside their own stronghold. While most of the Texan army attacked from both sides (theMexican forces attacking from above while American soldiers fought from below), it was eventually decided that frontal assault would be too costly so Santa Anna ordered his troops to withdraw instead allowing the Ranger defenders time to reload their firearms and plan another counterattack should they be attacked again soon afterwards. Unfortunately for these brave men – many of whom lost friends or family during this battle – no such counterattack took place as later reports claim that Mexican militiamen succeeded in taking advantage of lack thereof and massacred over 60 Texans including some members of Governor’s guard detachment who had tried unsuccessfully to stop the massacre
