In 1915 Captain Fenton Ewing donated his entire collection of pistols and rifles to the City of Alamo for use as museum exhibit pieces; these artifacts continue to be used today as part of the museum's pistol collection. The Alamo was a fortress that stood in the heart of Fort Worth, Texas for over two centuries. The fortifications were built during the Mexican-American War to protect American forces from an attack by Mexico. When the war ended, the fortifications were abandoned and used as a weapons depot. In 1875, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the disarmament of all American forces in Texas and the Alamo was among those firearms depots. On April 26, 1881, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Alamo Heights and most of his army retreated inside the fortification. A small detachment of Confederate cavalry under Captain John Buford attempted to storm the fortification but were unsuccessful. The Confederates eventually surrendered and all their weapons were taken away with them.

The site of the Battle of the Alamo began as an adobe mission on May 2, 1836, by Father José María Morelos and his band of Mexican soldiers under Colonel José Agustín de la Peña. It was even used as a prison from 1847-1855 while Texans were tried for treason against Mexico On July 6, 1776, six days after independence was declared by Americans at San Jacinto Creek near present day Austin, Lieutenant Colonel James Bowie led 9 men from Missouri's 4th Regiment into what became known as "the battle of Temple Mount". After routing five bands of Native American warriors who had been terrorizing settlers near that creek bed since early December 16th - including Bowie himself - he succeeded in capturing two hostages: Major John Foust (later governor) and Captain David Hackney (future first Lord Mayor of London). On orders from General George Washington - whose Headquarters were located nearby at Fort fertility - Bowie executed these captives just outside present day San Antonio on January 8th 1777 when 10 prisoners were taken captive by about 30 Native Americans instead of capitulating or fleeing like intended.
