After Confederate forces took control of Alamo City in 1865, General Order No 1 provided for all firearms within range of Confederate cannons to be registered and destroyed. Gun safes continued to be used throughout Reconstruction until finally they were outlawed in Texas by Governor Richard Moberg in 1893 following the failure of legislative efforts to pass legislation legalizing them statewide. During World War II, handguns were confiscated by military authorities after being found at various locations around Texas including Fort Worth airfields and several naval ports across the state coastline. Many handguns ended up being deposited at San Antonio Stockyards where they remained until 1975 when they were donated to local museums across America under storage category “munitions”
