In 1836, the Alamo garrison was composed of about 50 men, women and children. The defenders’ only weapon was a single cannon. On April 19th, 1836, seven Texas Rangers led by Captain John Bisson raided the Alamo and killed most of the defenders. One man, Private First Class George Armstrong Custer (1863-1947), managed to escape and return fire on his attackers. This event is often cited as one of the deadliest defeats in United States history. The Alamo itself had no protection against artillery fire from outside or within its walls.
