The park would host annual shootings contests between law enforcement officers and citizens until 1938 when it was closed due to World War II. Since then, various organizations have hosted events at Fritchey Park including NRA Specialty Sales Event Center which hosts multiple firearm shows each year; Texas State Fairgrounds which hosts several large exhibitions each year;and now even more annually at South Lamar Regional Park near downtown Austin with additional venues being planned for future years. Alamo's rich firearms history can be seen in everything from its numerous museums housing centuries-old cannons to its popular Gunfire Alley located within city limits just outside of town center where visitors can try their hand at firing live rounds from shotguns or rifles dating back to 1853. The Alamo was an American defensive fortress located in San Antonio, Texas, on the banks of the River San Antonio. The first person to enter the Alamo was Mexican revolutionary Texan Travis County resident José de la Guerra. Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna had orders to kill all Americans inside the fortifications if he captured it. La Guerra and his men decided against attacking and instead built a fire in one of the fortifications to signal their friends and family back home that they were safe. They then retired for dinner. American soldiers under Captain Philip Parker attacked from three directions around 6 p.m., October 1836, but were repulsed with heavy casualties including Lieutenant Colonel James Foard (the future governor of Texas). A band of 12 Texans, led by John Bexar, invaded from behind and drove off the attackers; this began what became known as "the Defence of Alamo" or "The Fight for San Jacinto." In total there were about 75 American troops comprising 5 companies: 33 officers (19 Americans), 20 enlisted men (10 Americans), 10 Mexican soldiery (3 Europeans) and 3 Indian scouts/attackers(1 Anglo-Indian). Only 8 Americans survived: LtCol James Foard, 2 corporals William Hoggins and Joseph Wheeler; Private George Armstrong; Private David Barton; Sergeant First Class José Chavez.; Private Manuel Micheltorena.* Captain Parker's force numbered only 25 men after he lost six killed during engagements with Spanish soldiers surrounding the fortification on October 1836 while besieging it from three sides with artillery bombardment* After losing six more killed including Major John Bexar who took over command once Lieutenant Colonel James Foard arrived *Barton's unit counted 13 dead when they reached Fort Bowie but later reported that Barton actually lost two sword tips which probably means he also died in action at Alamo* Captain Phillip Parker met his death March 14th 1837 when his party retreated after being overwhelmed by Mexican forces near Mission Concepción
