Addison is a city in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Addison is located in central Bastrop County on the east fork of the Neches River and its confluence with the Trinity River. The early history of Addison can be traced to 1836 when it was named for General James Addison, a hero of the Mexican-American War who had been wounded in battle and was then hospitalized in Corpus Christi. In 1840, John Wesley Hardin founded what would become Hardin County and platted what would become Addison as well. A post office called Addison was established in 1845, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1856, Confederate General Alexander Stephens sold his interest in Galveston Bayou to Dallas entrepreneur Sam Houston for $5 million dollars which made Addison one of the largest slaveholding cities within Confederate territory during this time period. Houston's ownership also led to an increase demand for goods and services fromaddisons black residents which contributed significantly to its growth as a slave-based community during this time period; many slaves were brought over from African countries specifically to work as farmhands or servants on mainstreet businesses such as merchants stores and hotels (e.g., The Royal Housetoe Hotel).
