Addison is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,959 at the 2010 census. Addison is the county seat of Johnson County. It is part of the Tyler–Marshall Micropolitan Statistical Area. Addison was founded in 1837 by John Addison and his wife Nancy as a trading post on the Neches River. In 1849, it became an agricultural center when George Hinton opened a cotton gin there. In 1865, Addison became the site of the first local oil well in Texas when Abraham Lincoln drilled one near present-day Addison Boulevard and Elm Street. The town's main street was named for him: Lincoln Boulevard (later renamed Eisenhower Boulevard). In 1888, Addison married Lula Gamache and moved to Wichita Falls, Texas; she died there in 1921. Addison was again founded as a town by incorporation on January 17, 1907 with a population of 298 people under the name "Wichita Falls". On July 1st of that year changes were made to its charter which stated that "The object shall be to promote agriculture through fairs and exhibitions; to provide recreations for citizens thereof; to cooperate with other townships within this county for purposes commonwealth life;" and that no more than twenty nine residents could each vote without becoming members of the Town Council which would then select two trustees who would manage all municipal functions including providing water fluoridation services and trash collections etcetera until such time as they were replaced by another body elected from among their membership collective voting on issues related thereto - an idea hatched by Mayor Dillard Hatch just before he resigned due to health concerns about his ability long serve on council should he become incapacitated or die prior thereto A new Town Hall building (located at 6th Avenue South) was dedicated on December 12th 1909following much hard work by citizens husbanding money provided courtesy from Mrs Gamache Trusteeship
