In 1865, he was executed at Johnson's Mill in Nashville before being transported back to Richmond where he met his end. AtADDISON'S centennial celebration on July 4th (1910), officials from all over America came to town to honor its roots and traditions. A variety of events were held throughout that year including an Agricultural Fair which attracted many farmers from surrounding counties; civic meetings; parades; concerts; food contests; and exhibition of local craftsmen...the climax being a dinner dance at Masonic Temple which drew more than 400 people from all over town." In 1903, Addison residents founded the first agricultural convention center west of Dallas on Buffalo Bayou adjacent to the Richards family rancho (now part of Duncan). This facility served as the basis for the now popular rodeo events that take place here annually over Labor Day weekend. In 1914 Addison voters approved annexation of neighboring Bedford by a margin of 54% to 46%. Russell Sage College was established in 1915 on land donated by Amos J Mclennan Jr., son of McLennan County Judge Amos J Mclennan Sr.. At this time Addison had a population of about 2200 people; it expanded rapidly with new construction and annexation until its peak population size of 50000 in 1940 when World War II halted growth. During World War II Addisons manufacturing sector produced munitions including radar equipment for bombers and tanks After 1945 addisons economy slowly began to revive with many businesses moving into town from outlying towns such as Commerce and Midland The downtown core remains barricaded off from most pedestrian traffic while several highrise buildings surround what used to be Main Street Addison has seen some significant changes over its history including: 1) The repeal by then Governor Tom Vilsack (D) of Prohibition which led to an increase in local alcohol production; 2) The establishment/promotion by Mayor Edwin Price (D) of Baylor University which soon thereafter created much needed jobs within town limits; 3) The incorporation/establishment as a city by Mayor Price followed by rapid growth culminating with its current form; 4) A period during which housing prices escalated markedly due primarily to strong demand from students attending Baylor University located just outside town limits; 5) A more recent period during which employment opportunities have dwindled due largely to declines within the oil industry
