The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; however, industry began to grow after World War II with the arrival of oil Refineries and other businesses in nearby towns such as Wichita Falls and Archer City. Manufacturing also took off during this time with Fairbanks Duchamp Paper Company manufacturing paper products such as envelopes until it closed in 1992. In 1876, Addison lost its status as an independent city when it merged with San Antonio. As part of the merger, Addison annexed portions of Commerce and Hays counties to form San Antonio City Limits. The growth of oil production during World War II led to increased development around Addisons downtown area including the addition of several industry parks that remain today such as Northpark Air Force Base and Valley Park Center mall. During the 1960s-1970s many new homes were built along US 281 near IH-10W known then as "Houston Freeway". This freeway section now forms the southern edge of downtown San Antonio
