Abilene, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 103,818 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Midland County and the largest city on the Texan border with Kansas City. The University of Central Texas (UCT) campus lies just east of Abilene in its downtown area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Abilene were French traders in 1701 and 1702. A small Indian village was located at what is now Wichita Falls before being moved to this location by General Antonio López de Santa Anna during his invasion of 1835. This new site became known as " San Felipe" or " Spanish Fort". A Mexican land grant called Rancho de la Bahía de Nueces was given to José Bárcenas on July 14, 1836. On October 15, 1837 a military detachment led by Captain William Hays attacked and destroyed San Felipe; however, this attack only served to fortify the site for future attacks by Mexico City's army under General José Joaquín Herrera y Rojas. It wasn't until 1845 that Abilene became part of Midland County when it was organized from parts of Burnet and Johnson counties. The town's elevation made growth difficult so a canal was built to provide water for cattle drives across Hearne Creek which ran through town limits southeast to Wichita Falls where it crossed into Johnson County then north through Burnet counties until it reached Wichita Falls On November 6th, 1907 Wm Hargrave opened an oil refinery near present day Edinburg within limits then owned by Harvey Jett & Company which later merged with Refiners Corporation of America In 1911 Ewing Harbison bought out Jett&Company’s interest in refineries Shipyards were added including one for submarines In 1915 Joe Hooker founded the Republican Party here In 1925 he sold off most assets here including oil refineries and shipyards to Standard Oil who named their new subsidiary Standard Oil Refining Company Incorporated Here we are today

In 1902, The American Scopes Company became a subsidiary of Brown & Williamson, Inc., which continued to produce quality telescopes and optics until 1985. The first telescope designed specifically for astronomical observation was the 8-inch (20 cm) refractor model KA4B in 1923. This telescope had a barrel that could be rotated about its vertical axis to change magnification levels from 20x up to 80x. A second 8-inch (20 cm) refractor model, KA4D, followed in 1929; these models were equipped with a rotating turret that gave them different magnification levels as well as an adjustable eyepiece objective lens system. In 1951, The American Scopes Corporation introduced their 5-meter telescope model SK1NXC; this instrument had a Schmidt design reflector and an variable focus eyepiece system that let astronomers use multiple objectives at once for greater precision when observing stars and galaxies! This instrument also became popular forAstronomy education classes because it is easy enough for students to use even after less experienced observers have learned how to read charts! In 1966, The American Scopes Corporation produced their 6-meter telescope model DK6NXC; this instrument had a large aperture reflector and could image targets up to 30 degrees wide! This beautiful instrument became popular among astronomers because it offered great detail for faint objects while still providing high magnification power—making it perfect for tight observing patterns! In 1987, The American Scopes Corporation discontinued production of their optical products but continued manufacturing their metal detectors which continue today as one of America's leading detector manufacturers
