However,the growth of oil production in Texas madeAbilene one of America’s leading petroleum cities by 1910, thanks in part to local entrepreneurs such as Jethro Tullius Fenton and Harvey Wickersham Sr.. With industry booming nearby came increased immigration from Europe; Hispanics made up nearly 60% of population by 1920 while African Americans made up just 10%. During World War II (1939-1945), many veterans from southwestern states fought against German aggression in Europe; many residents here are buried within Arlington National Cemetery or other military cemeteries near Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. In recent years, Abilenians have become increasingly active politically; state legislators currently comprise more than half of all voting citizens younger than 30 years old . Major economic development projects include The University OfTexas at Austin (UTA) Campus located adjacent to downtown – one of only two enclosed campuses major public universities in Texas –and FirstEnergy Corporation’s $2 billion clean energy project being built next door to IHOP restaurant – both announced last year .
