In Abilene, Texas, the history of firearms has been a part of the community for many years. In 1892, George W. Smith and Sons began manufacturing rifles in this city. This company continued to produce firearms until 1934. At that time, Abilene was the second largest city in Texas after Dallas. It had a population of over 120,000 residents at the time. The production of firearms here played an important role in the development of this city and its culture. What is Abilene, Texas? Abilene, a city in the US state of Texas, was founded in 1879 by citizens of New Mexico. It became a city on April 1, 1907. The population of the city increased from its original population of just over 10,000 in 1879 to more than 320,000 by 2000. The City Council has approved plans to make Abilene the second largest municipality in Texas by 2011. The history of the city starts with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1798 and named it "Avila." They soon realized that they could not grow crops there and abandoned the settlement. A group of Englishmen who had come to West Texas wanted to settle there so they renamed it "Albuquerque" after their home town near London. However, this name did not catch on and eventually be given up. In 1879, Captain Dodge established what is now known as Dodge County at what is now downtown Abilene. He attempted to levy a tax on cattle but was met with resistance from some of his own men who thought cattle weremerely tools for farming purposes and should not be taxed at all. This led to Dodge's death when he was run over by a wagon while trying to collect taxes one day later. His death set off a land war between Anglo-Americans and Mexican Americans that continues up until present day

ABILENE, Texas (CNN) - Abraham Lincoln was born in this small town in 1809, and he died here in 1865. The tiny community of Abilene is the setting for one of history's most dramatic moments: the Battle of Abilene Ridge, a decisive engagement that helped secure America's independence. The town was founded by families from Illinois who arrived in 1836. They quickly attracted settlers, and by 1840, the population had topped 1,000. The first school opened in 1845. In 1850, a sawmill and gristmill were built; the mills became important sources of income for the community. In 1862, Abilene was incorporated as a city; it remained an agricultural center until well into the 20th century. In 1936,Abilene adopted Texan statehood. It has since become known as "the Gateway to Texas." Today,Abilene is home to several high-tech companies and has become a popular tourist destination with its beautiful architecture and historical significance.

The first people to live in what is now Abilene, Texas were the Comanches. The area was first inhabited by the Wichita and Creek Indians. The Spanish began to arrive in the early 17th century, and they founded a mission here called San Francisco de los Pinos. In 1821, Texas became part of Mexico under General Antonio López de Santa Anna, and the mission was abandoned. In 1836, Texans revolted against Mexican rule, and on November 2nd, Texas declared itself a republic. On December 12th of that year, President Santa Anna ordered all Mexicans out of Texas. The Battle of San Jacinto occurred on April 6th of that year in which Mexican forces were defeated and their capital city Mexico City was burned to the ground. Aftermath: On October 16th of 1840, Texan forces led by Sam Houston attacked Mexican troops at the Alamo while they were besieging Austin; however only 7 soldiers were killed with most of them taken prisoner (the last major battle ended with Mexican General Antonio Lopez taking control). On February 2nd 1845 Texan forces droveMexican General Anastasio Meade from San Antonio after an eight-day siege On September 14th 1860 Abilene was chartered as a town when it became an intrastate county seat following passage of a state bill congress passed on September 10th
