After years of planning by Mayor Harry Laughlin Sr.,Abilenew century-old brick building on Main Street JR., two blocks north of downtownwas dedicated on December 15th,. It functioned as City Hall until 1963 when new City Hall Annex was built at 5th & Elm Streets NW across from Central Library (). The Rosenwald School has housed many famous teachers including Jesse Owens and Billie Jean King. Many businesses have also located in or near downtown Abilene over the years including banks, restaurants, theaters and more.
