In 1836, three Mormon missionaries, George Smith, John Taylor and Brigham Young, set out from Nauvoo, Illinois to found a new kingdom in Texas. The missionaries were met with hostility by the local population. They built an outpost called Fort Worth on the Trinity River near present-day Abilene, Texas. For many years they maintained a loose association with the Mormons in Nauvoo. In 1845 the group of Mormon pioneers was sold into slavery by their owners in Missouri. Brigham Young and his followers then traveled through Arkansas and Oklahoma to find new land for their people. On July 14th they reached Texas at San Antonio de Bexar (present day Austin). The first settlement in what is now Abilene was made by David Waddell on May 12th of that year. By 1840 there were over 100 residents living in the town square and around 10 miles outside of it on high ground known as Mount Pleasant. In 1841 Captain James Kenedy organized a wagon train carrying goods upriver to Pecos County for sale when he discovered an open region north of Wichita Falls which he named Kansas Territory instead of Abilene because no one wanted to buy land there. The first census taken in Abilene showed 452 people living there including 268 men who worked on building Fort Worth or ranching/farming properties along Trinity River Valley between 1835-1846; these “Fort Worthmen” remainedoki until after World War II when they became known as Texan veterans The fortuitous discovery of oil resources soon led to increased activity inAbileneand nearby Comanche Wells Fieldwhich enabled townspeopleto start making money handcrafts such as soap, candles and boots while investment allowed them to build public buildings such as Post Office(1844), Mayor’s Office(1848)and School(1849). Female householders began keeping grocery stores and general stores opened during this time period while men started opening restaurants which catered specifically to gourmands like Cowboys Dancing Ranch (later Longhorn Steak House) upstairs from old Masonic Lodge #4 (built 1865) before professional ice skaters moved into Cannery Row downtown beginning about 1910
