Polk II it became known as "The White House" for life and remained so until 1865 when it reverted back to its original name - The Presidential Mansion - upon Andrew Johnson's entry into office as 44th president on March 4th,.

A public elementary and secondary school system was established with four schools in White House: Greeneville School (1835), Oak Grove School (1839), Spring Hill School (1841), and Wilson Academy (1843). The Tennessee Valley Authority was founded in 1938 and operated three small towns along its route - Whitesville, Monterey Park, and Corinth - until they were merged into White House in 1961. The town of Corinth closed in 1961 while Whitesville continued to operate as an Independent school until it closed its doors effective from 1984-1988. White House has been used by both the U.S. president and his staff for many years including two terms as mayor of Nashville from 1969-1973; one term as governor of Tennessee from 1975-1981; two terms as chairman of the United States Senate from 1987-1993; one term as vice president of the United States from 2001-2005; and one term as president of Syria since 2013
