Gun swivels have a long and varied history in the White House, Tennessee. At one time, they were quite common among presidential staff and members of Congress. The White House in Nashville, Tennessee was the first gun-swiveling office in the United States. The president of the United States, James K. Polk, moved into the White House from his home in Dallas on February 12, 1845. At that time, Dallas had no municipal police department and only a few private citizens could carry firearms. In order to protect himself against possible attack by criminals or assassins while living in an open city government with few security measures, Polk ordered his administration to build a gun-swivelling office within the walls of the Executive Mansion at 5th and Vine Streets. The office became operational on October 15, 1845. It was staffed by six employees who rotated every two weeks so that no one person could have too much control over firearms in the executive branch. Since it was located inside of a secure building with presidential protections, the Office of Gun Swivels also played an important role in ensuring that American presidents were not threatened with assassination or other threats from outside sources.
In 1801, President James K. Polk built the White House in Nashville, Tennessee as his residence. The first president to live in the new structure was Ulysses S. Grant, who moved into it in 1885. Despite its building being a hundred years old and having seen many presidents, the White House has never been used for any real official activity. In fact, only four times since it was established have members of the United States Congress convened there: in 1797 when John Adams occupied the office of President; 1865 when Andrew Johnson became President; 1999 when Bill Clinton took office and declared a state of emergency; and 2008 when Barack Obama took office. The previous occupants include Presidents George Washington (1799-1805), James K Polk (1881-1885), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1945-1949), Harry Truman (1945-1953), Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1968), Richard Nixon (1974-1978), Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) and George W. Bush (2001-2009). The first African American to serve as President was Martin Luther King Jr., who served from 1969 to 1971 under then Vice Presidential candidate Nelson Rockefeller before he was elected on December 4th with 54% of the popular vote against Jesse Jackson’s 44%. After two terms as Vice President following Gore’s unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2000, Al Gore resigned from politics effective upon taking up a position at Yale University where he would become one of America’s most respected scholars and legal minds until his death at 73 years old on February 14th, 2004

The White House in Tennessee was built by President George Washington and his first wife, Martha. It served as the presidential home from 1793 until 1800. After being moved to Washington's Mount Vernon estate, the White House returned to Nashville in 1802. The president died at the home on April 20, 1801, and was buried there with his first wife and two children.
